Given the importance of achieving flexibility and interoperability, the reconfigurability of
manufacturing systems remains a key area of research in the industry. In this paper, we propose
an ontology-based model for managing the product process within a flexible manufacturing
system. This model addresses the technical challenges associated with product manufacturing
design and facilitates the conversion of the product’s semantic manufacturing process description
into its technical implementation within the manufacturing system.
The ontology is primarily structured around the components of the production system and the
product life cycle process. We tested our approach using a flexible cell case study to determine
the new product manufacturing process, employing a Depth First Search-based algorithm applied
to the proposed ontology.
